How to Clean and Care for Leather Shoes

A good pair of leather shoes, whether loafers, formal shoes, or boots, can last for years if you take care of them properly. Leather that's neglected cracks, dries out, and loses its shape far sooner than it should. Here's how to keep yours looking sharp for longer.

1. Remove Dust and Dirt First

Before applying any product, wipe your shoes down with a soft, dry cloth or a horsehair brush to remove surface dust and dirt. Cleaning over a dusty shoe just grinds grit into the leather.

2. Clean with a Damp Cloth and Mild Soap

For everyday cleaning, a slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap is usually enough. Avoid soaking the leather, and always wipe in gentle circular motions rather than scrubbing.

3. Condition the Leather Regularly

Leather conditioner keeps the material supple and helps prevent cracking, especially in drier weather. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, let it absorb for a few minutes, then buff off any excess.

4. Polish for Shine and Protection

Polishing isn't just cosmetic, it adds a protective layer against moisture and scuffing. Use a polish that matches your shoe's colour, apply in thin layers, and buff with a clean cloth or brush until you get an even shine.

5. Let Them Dry Naturally if They Get Wet

If your shoes get caught in rain, never dry them next to direct heat like a heater or in direct sun, as this can cause the leather to crack. Stuff them with paper to hold their shape and let them air dry at room temperature.

6. Use Shoe Trees Between Wears

Shoe trees help maintain the shoe's shape, absorb moisture, and reduce creasing, particularly useful if you wear the same pair often.

7. Rotate Your Pairs

Wearing the same leather shoes every day doesn't give them time to fully dry out and recover their shape between wears. Rotating between two or more pairs significantly extends how long each pair lasts.
